Black British Ballet
Two female dancers in the show.

Our final Island Movements dates!

It’s the last chance to see our Windrush themed ballet Island Movements!

This 30 minute ballet show tells the story of a Caribbean family whose parents came over on the Windrush. It explores the impact of this generation’s experiences on their families, communities and society. Beginning with a young female Caribbean soldier in WW2 Britain, this moving tale follows her and her family through their life in the UK up to the current day.

In partnership with Libraries Connected, the show features original music by the groundbreaking youth music charity Kinetika Bloco.

The show was devised by Darren Panton, who was the first black British dancer to graduate from the Royal Ballet School and Patrick Williams, who danced at Alvin Ailey and the Paris Opera. Greta Mendez MBE and Shevelle Dynott, formerly with English National Ballet, are choreographing.

We will tour libraries in England in the autumn, launching with a show at Clapham Library on 28 September and include a date at English National Ballet on 22 October. The show is part of a wider partnership with Libraries Connected which will see a brand new exhibition tour of libraries around England from October this year until November 2025.

Huge thanks to our funders, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England, Lambeth Council, Mayor of London and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
